James Abercromby was colonial agent in England for North Carolina from 1749
to 1758. Located here are two manuscript volumes of "An Examination of the Acts
of Parliament Relative to the Trade, and the Government, of the American Colonies.
Also the different Constitutions of Government in these Colonies, Considered,
with Remarks. . . ." One volume is a draft prepared by Abercromby for submission
to Lord Grenville in 1751 and includes a draft letter to Grenville. The other
volume is a revised clerks' copy prepared for submission to the Earl of Halifax.
The original volumes are available on microfilm roll 2232 and have also been
published in Magna Carta for America: James Abercromby's "An Examination
. . ." (1752) and De Jure . . .," Philadelphia: American Philosophical
Society, 1986, edited and with introduction by Jack Greene, Charles Mullett,
and Edward Papenfuse, Jr.
