Correspondence and legal papers of John Tod (b. 1779, d. 1830), Bedford attorney, judge, member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, 1810-1813, member of the Pennsylvania Senate, 1814-1816, and member of the U.S. Congress, 1821-1824. Reflecting the political, social, and economic life of the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century, these papers shed light upon episodes at Lancaster, Harrisburg, Bedford, Bedford Springs, and Washington, as well as upon happenings in New England, New York City, and on Long Island. They provide information on the War of 1812, the promoting of canals, the building of turnpikes and the financing of turnpike companies, the operations of banks, and partisan politics. Letters reveal much about election returns, and much about candidates for office, including Andrew Jackson.
