STOKES L. ROBERTS PAPERS

Educated at Princeton and employed in the Philadelphia law offices of George M.
Dallas, Stokes L. Roberts (d. 1882) was admitted to the bar and subsequently opened
an office at Newtown, Bucks County. Taking an active part in politics, he was
elected to Pennsylvania's House of Representatives in 1838 and 1839. After being
defeated for reelection in 1840, Roberts practiced law in Doylestown. He was made
deputy attorney general in 1844, was an unsuccessful candidate for congress in
1858, and was elected to the bench of the Bucks County courts in 1872.
Papers are mainly letters, 3.4 cu. ft., addressed to Stokes L. Roberts and
relating to legal, political, Civil War, and family matters. Correspondents
include William Bigler and Simon Cameron. Recipients of remaining letters, .1
cubic foot, include Albina and Eliza Roberts; Mrs. Stokes L. Roberts; and Susan,
Margaret, and Catherine Spangler.
