Papers of John Bear (b. ca. 1770, d. 1836), a "scrivener" of Plainfield, Cumberland County, pertaining chiefly to legal matters. Included are bonds, receipts, judgments, articles of agreement, and articles of apprenticeship connected with the settlement of various family estates, including those of Enoch Abrahams, Jacob Worst, Jacob Carpenter, Jacob Detweiler, Peter Good, Martin Washmuth, Jacob Greider, and Henry Bear. Featured are a number of papers relating to the Hanover and Carlisle Turnpike Road Company, 1813-25. There are also letters to John Bear and others, some of personal, literary, and political content.
