The Elmira Nobles Manufacturing Company, Elmira, New York, was purchased by Solomon Lewis Gillet and Robert T. Turner in 1879. This firm manufactured augers, wire carpet whips, and metal hat racks. Gillet operated it until 1886, when he rented it to a New York firm, Jennings & Co.
The records consist of General Correspondence, of the Elmira Nobles Manufacturing
Co., 1871, 1875-1885, and of the Gillet Manufacturing Company, 1876-1885. The
business correspondence and receipts detail business orders, prices, and deliveries
of tools and tool parts from Pennsylvania manufacturers of metal goods, stoves,
and tinware, mostly from Philadelphia, Scranton, and Pittsburgh.
