Among the items found are Personal Correspondence arranged alphabetically by surname of correspondent covering the years 1901 to 1945.
A Legal Correspondence generated during Heess' service as an attorney and public official contains an 1899 Republican Poll Book for Elkland Township. Only about a quarter of the file is incoming correspondence, and many of these are form letters received from state and federal agencies regarding routine administrative procedures.
Among the official items found are Applications for a Certificate of Arrival
and Facts for Petition for Naturalization made to the Court of Common Pleas
and the District Attorneys Office that provide information on immigrants to
Sullivan County between 1916 and 1929. The type of information typically found
in the Certificates includes the immigrant's name, marital status, immigrant
identification number, mother's maiden name, date and port of arrival, name
and nationality of the transport vessel, method of arrival, place where ticket
was purchased, name of person immigrant was to meet in America, location of
the immigration office where examined, names of other passengers with whom the
trip was made, date and place of residency in the United States, name of the
sovereign being renounced, and the names and addresses of any employers from
past five years. In the case of women, the Petitions usually also provide the
immigrant's postal address, occupation, physical description, marital status,
date and place of birth, the maiden name, and the date and place of declaration
of intention in addition to the standard information provided on the certificates
of arrival.
