Manuscript Group 336
HASTINGS-HICKOCK FAMILY ESTATE PAPERS
1766-1901
2500 items

The Papers consist primarily of correspondence, legal papers, and land deeds relating to the Bedford County ancestors of Ross Anderson Hickock (1876-1943), a Harrisburg industrialist, especially his great grandfather Dr. John Anderson (1770-1840). A native of Bedford County, Dr. Anderson studied medicine in Carlisle before establishing his practice in Bedford. A prominent Bedford County official and land speculator, he was also involved in the Allegheny Bank of Pennsylvania, the Chambersburg and Bedford Tuurnpike Company and, in his later life, a developer of Bedford Mineral Springs.

Much of the correspondence pertains to Dr. John Anderson, his wife, their children and grandchildren, his wife's relatives, and to matters relating to his interests in the Bedford Mineral Springs, legal papers, land deeds, etc. Also included are the papers of other relatives such as Anderson's son Espy Lyon Anderson (1810-1866); John Anderson's wife Mary Espy (n.d.) and her family including her father Captain David Espy (1730-1795), an early Bedford County Prothonotary, and grandfather George Woods, 1733-1795, noted land surveyor who planned the City of Pittsburgh.

Notable items include some letters relating to Pennsylvania Governor Daniel Hastings, Hickok's father-in-law. Also found are Bedford County militia records, 1775-1794; general correspondence of Dr. Anderson, 1777-1834; records of Dr. Anderson's business enterprises, 1774-1837; and land dealings, 1766-1834. Prominent correspondents include Samuel M. Barclay, Charles Brockly, Tench Coxe, Job Mann, Mose Hampton, John Metzger, Benjamin R. Morgan, and Jeremiah Prizer.
