Born near Marklesburg, Pennsylvania on April 14, 1862, Martin Grove Brumbaugh
served as Republican Governor of Pennsylvania from 1915 to 1919. Brumbaugh authored
a number of pedagogical works and religious histories including A History of
the German Baptist Brethren in Europe and America (1899). A graduate of Juniata
College, he served as Superintendent of Schools for Huntingdon County, 1884-1890;
was appointed first Commissioner of Education in Puerto Rico from 1900-1902; served
as President of Juniata College in 1895 and 1926 and as Superintendent of Public
Schools of Philadelphia, 1906-1915. He was a member of the National Educational
Association, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania German Society
and the Dauphin County Historical Society.
