ANTHRACITE MUSEUM COMPLEX COLLECTIONS

Administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, the Anthracite
Museum Complex was created in the 1960s and consists of two museums depicting
life in Pennsylvania's anthracite coal region. These are Eckley Miners' Village,
Eckley, and the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum and Scranton Iron Furnace,
Scranton. The collections include maps, mine elevations, schematic drawings, photographic
negatives, medical records, pay receipts, union dues receipts, and letters relating
to anthracite mining in Pennsylvania. These collections are housed at the Anthracite
Museum Complex in Scranton.
The collections include maps of the Seneca Colliery and mine workings in the
Clark Vein, Pittston City, Luzerne County (1921); a coal vein cross section
from Luzerne County (1915); a mining map of Hazleton City (undated); three maps
of a mine in the Red Ash Vein in Luzerne County (1920, 1921); and maps of Centralia
Colliery, Park Colliery, Middle Coal Field, Beaver Meadow, Hazleton Shaft Colliery,
the Coxe Brothers' Hazleton property, and the Spring Mountain Colliery, (1915).
Also present are numerous other maps and mine elevations, including Westmoreland
Colliery, Franklin Colliery, Seneca Colliery, Maltby Colliery, Harry E. and
Forty-Fort Colliery, Dorrance Colliery, Exeter Colliery, William A. Colliery,
Olyphant Colliery, Stevens Mine, Austin Mine, and the Scovil's Island Pittston
Vein, among others. There is also a 1920 chart showing the correlation between
the coal veins mined in various collieries of the Wyoming Valley, a 1936 Susquehanna
River Flood Area Map, a 1935 copy of Anthracite Mining Laws of Pennsylvania,
a 1914 copy of Practical Shaft Sinking, a 1946 copy of Clay Pipe
Engineering Manual, and a 1927 copy of the Goodman Mining Handbook.

- Cecelia Beese Collection consists of items relating to Beese's relative, Peter Gallagher, a member of the International Board of the United Mine Workers of America, including a letter from United Mine Workers president John Mitchell, ca. 1912, 2 folders.
- Chester Cipilewski Collection of glass negatives of the Weimer Machine Works Company of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, ca. 1900, 55 items.
- Lou Kistler Collection of medical records of White Haven Tuberculosis Sanitorium kept by Dr. Alexander Armstrong of White Haven, ca. 1900, 8 cu. ft.
- Albert Laumikonis Collection of miners' pay receipts, 1917-1955 and United Mine Workers' dues receipts, 1931-1948. .5 cu. ft.
- Mary Alice Mitchell Collection of items relating to her father, United Mine Workers President John Mitchell, ca. 1900-1920, 3 folders.
- Anna Ruchko Collection of schematic drawings of mine shafts and collieries at Draper, Gilberton, and Locust Gap, 1915-1950, 15 items.
- Edward Slimak Collection pertaining to Slimak's career as a miner with the Hudson Coal Company, Olyphant, ca. 1920-1940, .5 cu. ft.
