The Hershey Museum of American Life in Hershey, Pennsylvania, maintained collections
dealing with early Pennsylvania life and culture. Materials in their collection
included American decorative arts, 19th century Pennsylvania German materials
and arts, and North American Indian ethnographic and archeological materials,
as well as materials relating to Milton Hershey's life and the "company town"
of Hershey. The museum was closed in late 2008 to make way for a new museum, The
Hershey Story, which opened in early 2009.
The Hershey Museum Local History Collection contained items such as deeds, fiscal
items, justice of the peace dockets, land and tax records, marriage licenses,
and miscellaneous family papers from Berks, Clinton, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin,
Lancaster, Lebanon, and Snyder counties. In 2014 the records were transferred
to record groups appropriate to their type. County records were placed in RG-47,
Records of County Government; township records were placed in RG-48, Records of
Municipal Government; and school records were placed in RG-55, Records of School
Districts. A separate group of papers was compiled into the McElheny Family Papers
and placed into MG-8, the Pennsylvania Collection. Series descriptions of each
record in the new group notes that it came from MG-411.
