The parent unit of this regiment was constituted and organized in Philadelphia
on December 11, 1840 as the National Guards. It was initially a volunteer militia
assigned to the 1st Volunteer Infantry Regiment of Pennsylvania before being reorganized
on October 23, 1916 as the 2nd Field Artillery Regiment. The unit was known over
time as the Infantry Corps of National Guards of the City of Philadelphia in 1856;
the 2nd Infantry Regiment in 1861; the 90th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment
in 1862; the 2nd Infantry Regiment (National Guards) in 1867; the 2nd Pennsylvania
Volunteer Infantry Regiment in 1898; and the 2nd Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania
National Guard, in 1899.
The collection consists of regimental records and photographs. The records list the names of most of the men who were discharged and the reasons for discharge. Among the items included are:
Constitution and Enlistment Book, National Guards, 1840-1878, provides each guardsman's name, date of enlistment, residence (from 1860s on), height, age, hair and eye color, complexion, and occasionally date of death commencing in the 1870s.
Company Record Books, 1893-1916, contain records of rolls calls, drills, parades and marksmanship; returns for state property issued; annual allowance accounts, and orders issued.
Ledgers
Membership Book and Personal Record, 1858-1911, contains lists of lifetime
members and dues paying members including debit-credit ledgers and information
on admission, suspension, or death.
Minute Books of the "Old Guard", 1910, 1916-1948, contains a record of roll calls, orders drawn to pay bills, elections of officers, and resignations.
