Manuscript Group 438 WASHINGTON CROSSING HISTORIC PARK COLLECTIONS
The Washington Crossing Historic Park is the site where, on December 25, 1776, General George Washington crossed the icy Delaware River. He led his ragged troops across the river and assaulted the unsuspecting Hessians at Trenton. The victory bolstered and restored the nation's morale. The park is also significant for its portrayal of village, farm and industrial life in the Delaware River Valley area.
Among other items included in the collection is a letter written from Judsen's Hotel, New York by Morillo Noyes to his wife, Mrs. Morillo Noyes, November 11, 1851. The letter is significant because Noyes conveys the excitement aroused by a painting completed by German artist Emanuel Leutz titled, "Washington Crossing the Delaware." The painting had recently arrived in the city from Germany. In his letter, Noyes recounts the enormous size of the painting and describes it as a magnificent work of art.
A full-size replica of the painting now hangs at the Washington Crossing Historic Park.
