Manuscript Group 44 WILLIAM H. EGLE COLLECTION 1814-1899 .1 cu. ft.
William H. Egle (b. 1830, d. 1901), a native of Harrisburg, served through the
Civil War as a surgeon, engaged in historical research in the years following
1870, was state librarian from 1887-99, and edited the Second and the Third series
of the Pennsylvania Archives. The collection contains printed and manuscript items
relating to education, history, and personal matters. Items include a letter,
1814, from John Goulding, Harrisburg, to Walter Lowrie, U. S. senator from Pennsylvania,
on the subject of education and school construction; letters, 1821-22, addressed
to the commissioners of Cumberland County, relevant to school matters; and letters,
1873-99, to Egle from Grenville Dodge, Rutherford B. Hayes, Harriet Beecher Stowe,
etc.
