Thomas J. Murphy, Jr. served as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives
from the 20th Legislative District, Allegheny County, 1978-1993. Born in Pittsburgh
in 1944, he earned a B.S. in Biology from John Carroll University in 1967 and
a M.S. in Urban Studies from Hunter College in 1973. Murphy was a member of the
Knights of Equity, the Carnegie Museum, the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania,
the board of Mercy Psychiatric Institute, the American Waterways Orchestra, the
Ports of Pittsburgh Committee, Ben Franklin Partnership, Pittsburgh Children's
Museum, Pittsburgh Historic and Landmarks Foundation, and the Trans Finance Working
Group. Thomas J. Murphy was elected to serve in the House of Representatives of
Pennsylvania, representing the 20th Legislative District, Allegheny County in
1978. He was re-elected in 1980, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990, and 1992.
