Harry Seyler was a noted York area politician, serving as a member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly from 1948 to 1962. Born in York in 1908, Seyler earned an M.A. at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. He taught social studies in York City schools before becoming principal and later assistant superintendent. Seyler served in the army in World War II. He was elected to the State House of Representatives in 1948, and served three terms (1948-54). In 1954, he took over George Leader's vacant seat in the State Senate, serving from 1954 to 1962. While a member of the General Assembly, Seyler served on various committees including the Governor's Committee on Children and Youth, the Governor's Committee on Education, the Commission on Public Libraries, the DPI Planning Committee for Public School Adult Education, and the Advisory Committee on Standards to the State Council of Education. He was also appointed a delegate to the White House Conference on Education in 1956 and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1956. The high point in his political career was fighting a bill requiring citizens to swear a loyalty oath. Later, Seyler was employed in the Philadelphia office of the OEO, and then as Sunday managing editor of the York Gazette and Daily. He was also a member of the American Civil Liberties Union, and an actor at York Little Theatre where he performed in more than fifty plays. Seyler died on January 23,1994, in York.
