Judge William Hutchinson was born in Minersville, Pennsylvania on June 20,
1932. He graduated from Moravian College in 1954 and earned a J.D. from Harvard
Law School in 1957. He entered into private practice at Pottsville, Pennsylvania,
1958-1981; served as assistant district attorney for Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania,
1963-1968; county solicitor for Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, 1969-1972;
member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, 1972-1982; Judge of the
Pennsylvania Supreme Court, 1982-1987; and then Judge, U. S. Court of Appeals
for the Third Circuit. He was nominated to the Third Circuit by Ronald Reagan
on June 26, 1987, confirmed by the Senate on August 5, 1987, and received his
commission on August 6, 1987. He served until his death on on October 8, 1995.
These papers relate primarily to Merit Panels on which the judge served. The
entire collection is restricted until August 13, 2014, and public access cannot
be granted until then without prior approval from the donor.
