The Special Court Judges Association of Pennsylvania (SCJAP) is the private,
professional organization representing Magisterial District Judges, Municipal
Court Judges of Philadelphia, and Traffic Court Judges of Philadelphia. The
Association began its existence as the Pennsylvania Assocation of Courts of
Initial Jurisdiction, which was founded in 1973 after the merger of its two
predecessor organizations, the Pennsylvania Magistrates Association and the
District Justice of the Peace Association. The SCJAP was created to, according
to its by-laws, "foster, promote and advance, without becoming involved
in partisan politics of any kind, the study and application of the laws pertaining
to, administered by and affecting Special Court Judges, the proper observance
of judicial ethics and moral obligations by and among such officers and members,
the dissemination of legal and other information for the better performance
of the duties of such offices, and for social purposes provided in the non-profit
corporation."
The collection contains a number of administrative files, as well as publications
produced by the Judges Association and its predecessor organizations. Correspondence,
general administrative files, meeting minutes, copies of the SCJAP's newsletter
The Journal, bound volumes of the Pennsylvania Magistrates' Reporter,
as well as files relative to the Association's yearly conferences are included.
