This collection is comprised of three-hundred fourteen, 5" x 8" glass-plate
negatives taken by an anonymous female photographer during the 1890s. Identified
in self-portraits, it is believed the young woman took up photography as a hobby.
A number of the images depict scenes from the Harrisburg area, including views
of the Susquehanna River, the Rockville Bridge, and the Harrisburg skyline prior
to 1897. These seem to indicate that the family was from one of the communities
on the West Shore.
The majority of the negatives include photographs of family members taken over
a period of roughly ten years. They include images of an elderly man, one young
man, a young boy, one elderly woman, three young women, and an infant. The group
also contains numerous interior residence scenes of the family's home, as well
as pastoral views of the Harrisburg region and coastal views from New England,
specifically Gloucester, Massachusetts. Other subjects include still-lifes,
flood scenes, snow scenes, seasonal changes, and street scenes, including one
of an unpaved Front Street near St. Stephen's Church in Harrisburg.
