Correspondence, consisting mainly of letters from Theodore Burr, Pennsylvania
bridge builder, to John Downey, Harrisburg, and Thomas Elder, president of the
Harrisburg Bridge Company, relating to the construction of a bridge across the
Susquehanna at Harrisburg. The multi-arched "Camelback Bridge", so
called because of it's undulating shape, spanned the river in two sections on
either side of an island. It was completed in 1817 and stood until 1903. Also
included in the papers is a letter of introduction for Burr addressed to three
directors of the bridge company, progress reports on the Harrisburg Bridge and
requests by Burr for additional funds from the company.
