Pennsylvania Legislative Act 90 passed on April 13, 1868 authorized acquisition
of land and construction of the Danville State Hospital in Danville and Act
54 of March 27, 1873 established a governing board. As of 1998, Danville State
Hospital is still in operation.

The Lunacy Law of 1883 stipulated that two physicians sign the admission papers
of a patient and examine the patient within two weeks of admission to the hospital.
A magistrate confirmed that the signatures were valid. One part of the form
was signed by the doctors and the magistrate or judicial officer who authorized
the patient's admission and gives the patient's name, township and county of
residence. The second part of the admission form gives the patient's name, age,
gender, place of residence, occupation, and the names of parents, spouse, children,
brothers or sisters, or any other relations if none of the preceding names were
available. Also present is descripyion of when symptoms of insanity first began,
the circumstances that supposedly caused the insanity, the name of the medical
attendants who took care of the patient in the past year, and information about
the person who signed to have the patient admitted.

Employment agreements signed by men and women hired as attendants for Danville
State Hospital. The agreements were intended to put employees on notice that
they were not to neglect or maltreat patients and that they should report such
behavior to their supervisors. The agreements also specified that a portion
of their salary would be forfeited if they left before their probation time
was up, that they would be paid in the middle of the month, and that they would
forfeit any money owed them if they left without giving two weeks notice.

records the number of patients engaged in an activity. Activities listed for
persons under the "occupied" category include: out on parole, riding, attending
church in town, to the conservatory, out walking, in airing court, sewing room,
laundry, kitchen, ward work, reading and writing, sewing, indoor and outdoor
games, and other. "Unoccupied" categories include: sickness, unwillingness or
unfavorable weather. Other categories are: in bed during the day; wet and dirty
during the day; wet and dirty during the night; secluded; restrained; or at
chapel. Later volumes starting in the 1920s include restraint and seclusion
divided by gender, ball games, dances, chapel, movies, farm and garden, domestic

or state of birth; number of children and number of siblings; admission number,
any previous admission numbers, census of hospital at the time of admission,
and admission date. Commitment information includes name of payee, by whom committed
(friends, court, or overseer of the poor); whether an insane convict or criminally
insane; bodily condition; name of physical disorder, if any; name of mental
disorder; supposed cause of insanity; complications (epileptic, suicidal, homicidal,
idiot, paralytic, imbecile); duration of attack in years, months and days; and

Index was created to monitor the county and poor district's debt and payment
to the Hospital. For each county or poor district, the patients for whom they
were financially responsible for are shown together with the page number in
the ledger and the quarterly or monthly dates. For each quarter the patient
was in the hospital a check mark was entered and if their account was paid two
slash marks were placed through the check mark. If the patient left the hospital,
the account states "pd" if the account was paid in full. Some accounts show
the date when the patient left the hospital and some accounts contain entries
for both public and private patients. Private patients have numbers listed that
could be the amount they owed.

Each page of this volume contains a single entry documenting the following patient
statistics: population, including indigent and private; number employed; number
restrained; number secluded; number under medical treatment; and death, injuries
and violence. These appear to have been compiled monthly and are separated by
gender. The remainder of the page provides information on the treatment of patients
including name, date, reason for restraint, type of restraint and length of
time, or reason for seclusion and length of time. Most patients were secluded
because they were homicidal and were restrained for medical reasons to prevent
self injury or excitement.
Minute Book of the Medical Board of the Hospital for the
Insane,

The Medical Board consisted of members of the medical staff. Minutes document
who was present at each meeting, medical diseases circulating around the hospital,
and the admission policy for the training school for attendants. Other items
included are a review of papers from the Pennsylvania Medical Society Annual
Meeting and a statistical report on prostitutes. Most entries at the end of
the volume mention the Board's review of cases for diagnosis, furlough and remission
of diagnosis. Occasionally patient names are mentioned.

Although the spine of the volume says "this is a burial plot record," it actually
contains similar information to that found in the Male Admission Register, 1884-1923
{series #23.35} and Female Admission Registers, 1884-1923 {series #23.24}. Information
provided for each patient includes register number, name, sex, color, age, place
of birth, residence, occupation, and marital status. Information on each patient's
condition includes who committed (court order, friend) and who paid for keep,
cause and form of insanity, names of any insane relatives, any complications,
number of attacks and admissions, and the duration of attacks before admission.
Information regarding release includes date of discharge, type of discharge,
time in hospital, by whom patient was removed, and remarks. At the end of the
volume is a diagram of burial plots from approximately 1872 to 1937 showing
the grid location where each deceased patient was buried, their name, when they
died and when they were buried. Some entries also note whether deceased patients
were veterans or if their bodies were removed.

Ledger for special appropriations at the Danville State Hospital. Information
given transaction includes date, purpose, and whether a debit or a credit to
accounts was issued. Typical expenditures cover boiler repair, creating a cold
storage plant, rewiring buildings, and building a cottage to house patients
having infectious diseases. The State Auditor General stamped those pages that
were audited. This the second of a two-volume set, the first volume of which
is missing.

or surplus of expenditures.
