MG-188. WOODS FAMILY COLLECTION, 1794-1952 (bulk 1861-1866).

Papers of the Woods family, Centre County, including Civil War letters, 1861-1865, of John F. Woods, and letters of various family members, 1849-1895. One such letter is dated October 11, 1861 from John F. Woods to his sister. Stationed at Prospect Hill, Virginia, he explained that his regiment, the 49th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, had just moved from their earlier location to merge with another unit and notes that "some of the Negro cooks started with us to march and he [the commanding officer] sent them back and told them and us that he did not associate niggers with his men."
