MG-329. IVAN L. CARTER PHOTOGRAPHS, [ca. 1922-1938].

A lifetime resident of Carlisle, Ivan L. Carter (1894-1971) was a druggist and amateur photographer occasionally hired to record community events. The State Archives received his negatives in 1980 from Donald Garlin of Palmyra, who obtained them at an estate auction. Over four thousand glass plate and film negatives, dating between 1920 and 1938, depict Carlisle and south central Pennsylvania, particularly Dickinson College and the Medical Field Service School (Carlisle Barracks). African Americans appear in a number of the photographs:
