MG-359. 104TH CAVALRY PENNSYLVANIA NATIONAL GUARD VETERANS’ ASSOCIATION COLLECTION, [ca. 1914-1975]. {unprocessed}

The 104th Cavalry, Pennsylvania National Guard, was originally constituted in 1874 with the designation as the 8th Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania National Guard. After undergoing several reorganizations and re-designations, the unit was consolidated in 1921 to include four troops from the 1st Cavalry (one of which was known as the Governor’s Troop) and was re-designated as the 104th Cavalry. Thereafter, the entire 104th Cavalry was commonly referred to as the Governor’s Troop. The unit was mustered into federal service during the Spanish-American War and also saw overseas action during both the First and Second World War. The 104th Veterans Association that was founded in 1966 donated this collection to the Pennsylvania State Archives in 1983. Among the collection are a number of photographs that show African Americans, none of which are dated or marked in any way. One is of a baseball game among army personnel in which the umpire is an African American. Other photographs portray African Americans in various group scenes.
