Update to the "Guide to African American Resources at the Pennsylvania State Archives"

by Willis Shirk

The Pennsylvania State Archives is a valuable resource for discovering the rich historical contributions of African-Americans to the history of the nation and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In 2000, archivist Ruth E. Hodge published the Guide to African American Resources at the Pennsylvania State Archives that has served as the definitive guidebook for locating these types of records. Since the publication of that original Guide nearly a decade ago, an additional fifteen record groups and 62 manuscript groups have been received by the State Archives and this electronic listing has been updated to reflect content relating to African Americans among these new acquisitions as of 2009. While all of these new accessions remain unprocessed, recent Minimal Processing efforts at the State Archives have made it possible to identify the following additional relevant materials for conducting research into the history of African Americans in Pennsylvania.
