Letters from Matthew S. Quay to Viti Brothers, Philadelphia, concerning orders for busts of classical figures. Matthew Stanley Quay served as military secretary to Governor Andrew Curtin and supervisor of transportation and telegraph operations during the last two years of the Civil War. He subsequently aligned himself with Republican Senator Simon Cameron. Simon Cameron, Quay, and then Boies Penrose succeeded each other as GOP machine chief. With occasional setbacks, Quay was supreme from 1884 until his death in 1904. Penrose then took control and held it until he died on December 31, 1921.
