Chiefly correspondence of John Adlum (b. 1759, d. 1836), Pennsylvania surveyor, land speculator, and "Father of American Viticulture," with members of his family. Other correspondence includes a letter from Adlum to General William Wilson, August 31, 1794, concerning a possible Indian attack on the Pennsylvania frontier; a letter to Adlum from Alexander Hamilton, June 8, 1799, requesting Adlum to assume command of certain troops to be stationed at Easton and Reading; a letter to Adlum from Judge Richard Peters, December 4, 1816, regarding the raising of various plants; and a facsimile manuscript letter from Thomas Jefferson, April 11, 1823, acknowledging the receipt of two bottles of wine.
