UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST DEPOSIT
OF
GERMAN REFORMED SALEM CHURCH OF HARRISBURG RECORDS,
1787-1916
4 cu. ft.

The German Reformed Salem Church of Harrisburg was founded in 1787 and its records were deposited by its successor, the Salem United Church of Christ, which currently stands at 231 Chestnut Street in Harrisburg. The origins of the German Reformed Church lie in slight theological differences with Martin Luther espoused by Ulrich Zwingli and Jean Calvin. The Reformed churches in America became united as the Evangelical and Reformed Church in 1934. In 1957 the Evangelical and Reformed Church joined with the General Council of Congregational Churches to form the United Church of Christ.
