Donated in 1981 by Jean F. Gerdes, these photographs were originally collected
by Jean T. Duff, wife of Pennsylvania Governor James H. Duff. The photographs
relate to the life and career of James H. Duff (b. 1883, d. 1969), primarily during
his term as Governor of Pennsylvania, 1947-1950, and United States Senator, 1951-1957.
Included with Duff are family and staff members, professional entertainers and
celebrities, and state and nationally known politicians of the era. Most items
are 8" x 10" glossy photoprints taken by professional photographers in Harrisburg
and Washington, D.C., and are usually publicity stills. Subjects include Duff's
inauguration as Governor, campaigning for Presidents Truman and Eisenhower, as
a participant on "Face the Nation" and "Meet the Press," as a member of various
Senate subcommittees, and delivering speeches. Prominent politicians include Vice
President Richard Nixon, Alben Barkley, Senators Hugh Scott, M. Harvey Taylor,
John Kennedy, Margaret Chase Smith, Henry Cabot-Lodge, Robert P. O'Neill, Everett
Dirksen, Hubert Humphrey, and John McCormick Celebrities present include James
Stewart, Alexi Smith, Robert Montgomery, Richard Long, Sophie Tucker, Boris Karloff,
Walter Cronkite, Clare Booth Luce and others.
