Edward Camphausen (b. 1823, d. 1903) was an Erie attorney and U.S. consul in Naples,
Italy, 1885-1890. In this collection is outgoing correspondence, mainly press
copies but some written copies, contained in 3 letter press books. Subjects discussed
include legal business prior to Camphausen's departure for Naples, consular business
in Naples and the climate there, the prospect of his return to Erie following
the Democratic defeat in the 1888 election, the health of his family and friends,
the quality of his successors at the consulate in Naples, his interest in obtaining
another appointment after the Democrats' 1892 presidential victory, and political
developments on the local scene.
