Born in Maryland, John A. J. Creswell (b. 1828, d. 1891) was educated at Dickinson College, represented Maryland in the U. S. House of Representatives, 1863-65, and in the U. S. Senate, 1865, served as postmaster general of the U. S., 1869-74, and as counsel for Alabama Claims in the U. S. Court of Commissioners, 1874-76.

Papers, 64 items, contain mostly letters received by Creswell from federal and state officials concerning his activities as postmaster general, particularly appointments. Several matters relate to the Civil War. Correspondents include:
