George Mifflin Dallas (b. 1792, d. 1864) was mayor of Philadelphia, 1828-29, district attorney, 1829-31, U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, 1831-33, attorney general under Governor Wolf, 1833-35, vice president under James K. Polk, 1844-48, and minister to Great Britain, 1856-61. Located here are 14 letters from George M. Dallas pertaining mainly to political patronage. Included is a letter from Dallas, London, 1857, to H. D. Gilpin, relative to the political situation in England and the mutiny in India, and a letter to T. Apoleon Cheny, historian, referring to Cheny's research work in western New York, 1863.
