William Taylor was born in Huntington County, Pennsylvania, September 8, 1843. In his eighteenth year he enlisted in the 22nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry and served nine months before enlisting in the 3rd Provisional Volunteer Cavalry in which he served until the close of the Civil War. He was honorably discharged after serving for two years and nine months. After the war he entered the teaching profession and prepared for the ministry. He served a pastorate with the Erie Conference and Nebraska Conference before establishing himself as a minister in Oakland, California. He was engaged in the ministry for fifty years before his death on May 2, 1927.

The collection includes twenty-two carte-de-visite photographs portraying images of Taylor, his friends, military personnel in Company M, as well as images of a man who nursed Taylor during a wartime hospital stay, and the preacher who married him. Many of the photographs include notations on the back identifying the subjects and often include personal remarks by Taylor. In addition, some are imprinted with the name and city of the photographer. Two items are ferrotype cartes-de-visite, the rest are albumen prints.
