Manuscript Group 45 ELDER FAMILY COLLECTION 1786-1850 5 cu. ft.
These are papers concerning the Elder family of Dauphin County. Featured are correspondence
and legal papers of Thomas Elder (b. 1767, d. 1853), who served in Captain Dentzel's
Company during the Whiskey Insurrection, practiced law in Dauphin County from
1791, and held the post of attorney general of Pennsylvania from 1820-23. Other
family members represented are Joshua Elder (b. 1744/45, d. 1820) and Samuel Elder
(b. 1772, d. 1815), high sheriff of Dauphin County from 1800-1803. Included are
business, land, and legal records involving Alexander Berryhill, Henry Buehler,
William Buehler, Simon Cameron, Thomas Forster, John GLoninger, William Graydon,
Jacob Greenawalt, John A. Hanna, Robert Harris, John Joseph Henry, Gabriel Hiester,
John Kelker, William Kelso, John Kerlin, William Maclay, Abraham Wickersham, etc.
Considerable material relates to the Harrisburg and Presque Isle Land Company.
