Founded by Mahlen H. Clapper in 1921, the Shippensburg Woolen Mill specialized
in custom manuacturing of woolen blankets. Upon his death in 1969, the company
operations were continued under the management of his sister-in-law Miss Alma
Van Scyoc who conducted most of the company's business by mail, though a few
customers would still come into the office to buy woolen blankets without exchanging
any wool. By 1974, the Shippensburg Woolen Mill was the last woolen mill still
doing custom business in the United States. The business records include catalogs,
price lists, orders, inquiries, cash disbursement ledgers, accounts receivable
for Balmont Yarn Company, account and subcontractor activity book for Lass O'
Scotland Company, customer and supplier ledger books, lists of supplier addresses,
technical manuels, research books, and miscellaneous materials.
