Born in Marion Center, Pennsylvania in 1910, F. Glade Loughry received his B.S. in Agronomy from Penn State University in 1931, an M.S. from Ohio State University in 1934, and a Ph.D. from Penn State University in 1960. Loughry worked at the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station from 1931-1933, was a soil scientist for the USDA Soil Conservation Service from 1934 to 1966, a soil and sanitation specialist for the Pennsylvania Department of Health from 1966-1971, and Chief of the Soil Science Unit of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources from 1971 to 1985. The collection contains papers and notes from high school; undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral studies; books from the library of his professor, Dr. Merkle; and bound professional publications and periodicals. Sixteen cubic feet of this material was donated to the Penn State Archives in State College and the remainder has been accessioned here at the State Archives including conference proceedings, abstracts, and bulletins, professional subject files and correspondence concerning soil science and conservation work at the Departments of Health and Envoronmental Resources, soil survey and progress reports, field diaries, and daily activity reports.
