{series #286m.1549} [Holdings]

This series is arranged into two subseries: the Photograph File (Historical) and the Slide and Negative Files.

An amalgamation of a number of different accessions and groupings, the Historical Image File contains twenty-two boxes of color film slides, glass plate negatives, lanterns slides, negatives, and photographs that relate to nearly every facet of the operations of the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) and some of its subsidiary lines. Views depicted in these images include subjects such as bridges, canals, city scenes (including photographs showing the aftermath of rioting in Pittsburgh brought on by the Great Railroad Strike of 1877), disasters (including the 1889 Johnstown Flood), locomotives, physical and support facilities, portraits of PRR presidents, railroad officials and workers, rolling stock, snow and ice removal, stations, terminals, and tunnels.

The Photograph File (Historical) is contained in fourteen boxes. Organized by subject, these photographs and miscellaneous printed matter cover a wide range of topics, depicting various operational aspects of the PRR, as well as shots of its workforce, and scenes along its extensive trackage system. Many, but not all, of the images include captions that identify the place and/or date the photograph was taken. Photographers are also noted on many of items, including such names and studios as Purviance, Keystone, and William Rau of Philadelphia; E. Walter Histed and J. Eichbaum of Pittsburgh; R.A. Bonine of Altoona; C.W. Derstine of Lewistown; B. Hellmich and M.J. Jahelka of New York City; as well as many others. Oversized items have been pulled from their original boxes and placed into an oversized box at the end of the subseries.

The Slide and Negative Files include six boxes of lantern slides, which contain views of the Old Penn Station, the Altoona Shops, bridges, the Horseshoe Curve, track scenes, tunnels, and numerous images related to Philadelphia railroad facilities. Also present is one box of color film slides pertaining to European (including Russian) railway complexes, and one box of miscellaneous slides and glass plate negatives, many of which depict images of facilities and towns in the area of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
