C3.) Harry Springer/Frick Company Photographs (folders 14-1 through 14-9)
Harry Springer was a professional photographer in Scottdale.  About 1915, he was hired by the HC Frick Company to take picture of its company towns in Westmoreland and Fayette Counties. William Cramer was head of Frick Company (now US Mining Co.) Drafting Section.  In 1959, during a long strike, as management he had nothing to do,so he began cleaning out the office.  He found about 600 8x10 contact prints mounted on cloth.  They were the prints Springer took for the Frick Company.  Cramer contacted John Enman, who was working on his Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Pittsburgh re:  Bituminous Mining Communities.  Enman borrowed the prints and had 2nd generation copies made, which is what the Archives has today.  Enman returned the original prints to Cramer, who has since retired.  At this writing the prints are probably in the possession of the US Mining Company in Uniontown.  Enman suspects they may have been given to the new Frick Museum in West Overton. [Not at West Overton] Springer’s original 8x10 plates somehow ended up in Connellsville.  A Connellsville photographer told Enman the building they were in was razed about 25 years ago with the plates in it.  There may have been a few that survived the headache ball, but the bulk are most likely destroyed. 8/15/86 Linda Ries
