The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is responsible for administering the Pennsylvania National Guard, and administers various programs of assistance to veterans. The head of the Department is the Adjutant General. It was established in 1793 as the Adjutant General's Department, became known as the Department of Military Affairs with the passage of the Administrative Code of 1923, and assumed the name Department of Military and Veterans Affairs in 1995. Included in the Department at one time were the State Athletic Commission, which was placed in the Department of Revenue in 1937, and the Pennsylvania Aeronautics Commission, whose functions were transferred to the Department of Transportation in 1970.

NOTE: The State Archives holds Scotland School student files only through 1975. For student files dated 1976-2009, researchers must contact Jason Gift of Ft. Indiantown Gap at (717) 861-8656. Student records are restricted as per the federal Family Educational Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974. Generally, they are closed to all persons but the student (or someone obtaining the student's written permission) for 50 years after death of student or 100 years from date of creation. Open information, unless a refusal by the student is on file, includes student's full name, address, phone number, date and place of birth, college, major or level, weight and height of athletic team members, dates of attendance, full or part-time status, degrees and awards received, most recent prior educational institution attended, photograph, and other similar information. Medical information is restricted under the federal Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Contact State Archives for further details.
