The Office of Inspector General (OIG) was created by Governor Robert P. Casey's Executive Order No. 1987-7 on April 6, 1987. The purpose of the OIG is to deter, detect, prevent and eradicate fraud, waste, misconduct and abuse in the operations of state executive agencies; to keep the Governor and the heads of executive agencies fully informed about problems and deficiencies relating to the administration of agency programs, operations and contracting; and to provide leadership, coordination and control over satellite offices in designated executive agencies.

The OIG investigates allegations of fraud, waste, abuse, misconduct or conditions constituting a substantial danger to the public health or safety in the activities of state executive agencies under the Governor's jurisdiction, submitting reports of its findings to the heads of agencies and to the Office of General Counsel. The OIG's staff assists federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in investigation and prosecution of criminal cases involving fraud against the government.

The OIG consists of an executive office with a Special Investigations Unit, Eastern and Western regional offices and satellite offices in seven departments: Corrections, Environmental Resources, General Services, Labor and Industry, Public Welfare, Revenue and Transportation.
