Records of the DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION AND NATURAL RESOURCES
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) was created by Act
1995-18 which took effect July 1, 1995, and divided the functions of the abolished
Department of Environmental Resources (DER) between DCNR and the newly created
Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The department is charged with maintaining
and preserving the commonwealth's 117 state parks; managing the 2.1 million acres
of state forest land; providing information on the state's ecological and geologic
resources; and establishing community conservation partnerships with grants and
technical assistance to benefit rivers, trails, greenways, local parks and recreation,
regional heritage parks, open space and natural areas. In June 1996, the Bureau
of Recreation and Conservation was transferred to DCNR from the Department of
Community Affairs upon that department's abolition.
Related records will be found in the Records of the Department
