SUBJ: PHMC TO UNVEIL HISTORICAL MARKER FOR PHILADELPHIA'S BROAD STREET STATION

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) will join the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society to unveil a historical marker for Broad Street Station at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, at 15th & Market streets, Philadelphia.

Broad Street Station was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1881 and enlarged in 1893 to be the world's largest railroad passenger terminal. Its significance encompasses the architectural, technical, industrial, and social aspects of Pennsylvania's history in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

An engineering marvel in its time, the building also housed the corporate headquarters of the Pennsylvania Railroad, once the largest corporation in the United States and the largest carrier of freight in the world.

The station remains part of Philadelphia folklore, arts, letters, novels, essays and illustrations. More than 1,700 historical markers dot Pennsylvania's landscape, forming a visual, educational and cultural map to introduce travelers to the Commonwealth's heritage.
