Forebay not Enclosed
Dunlap Barn, Centre County.
This log double-crib Pennsylvania Barn has a cantilevered forebay. It lacks any
gable-end enclosure, and instead is supported by joists extending outward from
the barn floor. This framing system creates an asymmetrical gable profile. Sometimes
this variant of the Pennsylvania Barn is called a "Switzer" (Swisser, Sweitzer) barn.
