Gambrel Roof

A gambrel roof has a central ridge at the top, and the upper-level area is expanded by two additional ridges, one on either side of the central ridge. This gives more room for hay than a traditional gable roof. The basement barn in the photo below has a shed roof extension on the downslope side, and the milk house in the foreground has a shed roof.
