Potato Storage Cellar
A potato storage cellar is essentially a large, specialized root cellar. It takes advantage of constant below-ground temperatures to store potatoes before sale. The distinctive feature of a potato storage cellar is that it looks as if a large roof were simply placed on the ground. Potato storage cellars can be found in many parts of the state, but they are most numerous in the potato regions of Lehigh County and Potter County. They mainly date from the early 20th century, when commercial potato culture grew to a large scale.
