Site Summaries
Most of what we know about the prehistory of Pennsylvania comes from projects conducted to comply with state and federal laws that protect archaeological sites. These projects are funded by agencies such as PennDOT and the Army Corps of Engineers, as well as by private entities such as utility companies and developers. The archaeological investigations are required only at sites that are determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places because they contained information that provided a greater understanding of Pennsylvania's past.
Many of these projects have had extensive public outreach programs that involved volunteers in the excavations, site tours, and public lectures.
