Stone Types

There are four general types of stones typically used in Pennsylvania's historic cemeteries. These stones have different physical and chemical properties that affect performance and durability in the outdoor environment and contribute to their deterioration. Five typical types of stone grave markers include:

  • Slate
  • Marble/Limestone
  • Granite
  • Sandstone

It is important to properly identify the types of stone and the types of deterioration before implementation of conservation treatments. For more information on identifying stone types please visit the Pennsylvania Geological Survey website.
