GEORGE E. HASSEN COLLECTION
Assembled by George Hassen, a forty-year employee in the Dining Car Department of the Pennsylvania Railroad and Penn Central Railroad Companies, it is a collection of photographs, press releases, pamphlets, etc., relating to the "Congressional" and "Senator" trains. Of particular interest are photographs bearing the following captions: new Congressional bar lounge, new Congressional dining car, new Congressional coffee shop, new Congressional and Senator drawing room, new Congressional and Senator observation car, and the new Congressional and Senator parlor cars. In these photographs African Americans appear working as bartenders, waiters, cooks, attendants, and redcaps (luggage handlers).
