William Albert Hunter, (1908-1985) taught history and literature at Sharpsville
High School, 1934-1945; served as a historian for the Pennsylvania Historical
and Museum Commission, 1945-1961 and as chief of the Pennsylvania Historical and
Museum Commission's Division of History, 1961-1976. He lectured and published
widely on 18th Century Pennsylvania history and is best known for The Forts
on the Pennsylvania Frontier, (Harrisburg, 1960).
The collection contains rough notes and drafts, letters and published copies
of book reviews, 1955-1985; publications, 1936-1978; and speeches, 1946-1985
authored by Hunter. Correspondence to and from Hunter is often from parties
seeking answers to questions about 18th-century Pennsylvania forts or personages.
Other items found include photostatic or xerox copies of documents collected
by Hunter during his research at various repositories and the original letters
of Redmond Conyingham, a 19th Century Lancaster County Historian.
