Manuscript Group 485 T. Fred Woodley Collection, 1830-1837 (1.5 cu. ft.)

Born July 8, 1894, T. Fred Woodley graduated from West Chester State Normal School in West Chester, PA and served as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Field Artillery during World War I. After the war, he graduated from the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania. He subsequently authored an important biography of Thaddeus Stevens entitled The Great Leveller: The Life of Thaddeus Stevens, ran for Congress on the Republican ticket in 1936 and 1940, practiced law in Bangor, PA and died in 1951. This collection consists of original source materials he used for his biography of Stevens including a framed lithograph portrait of Stevens, two boxes of research note cards, photograph and book gally proofs, one bundle of items labeled "Thaddeus Stevens Papers," and file folders of miscellaneous research materials. Also present is one copy of The Great Leveller: The Life of Thaddeus Stevens by Woodley and one copy of Thaddeus Stevens by Woodley.
