George Hart was born in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, in 1919. Since the 1930s, Hart photographed trains and collected photographs of railroads, especially the Reading Railroad. He was also the first director of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg.
The collection contains forty-seven photographic prints of stereographic views made from original glass negatives, including several photographs of railroad stations belonging to the Pennsylvania Central Railroad. Subjects include Niagara Falls, N.Y., ca. 1860 by Platt D. Babbitt (twenty-four items) and glass negatives of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, dating 1910-1921 (forty-four items). Most views are numbered and dated, showing Reading facilities at Mahanoy Plane, St. Clair, Cressona, and Trenton Junction among others.
